Health Unit Spotlight: City of Hamilton Public Health Services

The City of Hamilton Public Health Services has been involved with RRFSS as far back as 2004.  Most recently Hamilton has been able to use RRFSS to provide a local perspective on current health topics of interest including:

  • Cannabis use

  • Perceived public stigma towards substance user

  • Problem technology use

  • Problem gambling behaviour

Similar to other health units who participate in RRFSS, the support provided by RRFSS in developing modules and collecting local data helps to inform health promotion campaign planning, service deployment, and strategic planning within the health unit. Also, through its network, RRFSS has been able to connect Hamilton to other public health units and facilitate the development of data collection tools to address health topics of similar interest.

Vaping… get more data with RRFSS

RRFSS is planning on developing new modules that collect more in depth information about vaping behaviours beyond the RRFSS Tobacco Products and E-cigarettes module. In addition, we are looking at collecting data on beliefs and perceptions on vaping with the general population as well as support for policy changes.

RRFSS continues to be the ‘Top Dog’ in public health surveillance…

RRFSS has over 300 modules including 9 new ones that York Region Public Health has developed related to climate change such as:

Climate Change - Attitudes Towards Action

Climate Change -Experience and Impact on Health

Climate Change – Perceptions of Health Impacts of

Climate Change – Audience Segmentation
